Whitepapers

An Introduction to Wireless Mesh Networking

Wireless networks provide unprecedented freedom and mobility for a growing number of laptop and PDA users who no longer need wires to stay connected with their workplace and the Internet. Ironically, the very devices that provide wireless service to these clients need lots of wiring themselves to connect to private networks and the Internet.

This white paper presents a viable alternative to all those wires - the wireless mesh network. Unlike basic Wi-Fi that simply untethers the client, the wireless mesh untethers the network itself giving IT departments, network architects and systems integrators unprecedented freedom and flexibility to build out networks in record time, without the expensive cabling.

Mesh Networks: Capabilities and Benefits

This Farpoint white paper introduces the key concepts embodied in Wi-Fi mesh technology in comparison to traditional WLANs and explores the economic impacts. It outlines a future in which the "over-the-air" backhaul will profoundly reduce costs and where the typical wireless LAN will be mesh-based.

Case Studies

Case Study: Holiday Inn

An American classic, Holiday Inns have served as a backdrop to family vacations and welcomed legions of weary road warriors over more than five decades. Even the towels have become icons with their distinctive green stripe. But if you happen to stay at the Bluefield, West Virginia Holiday Inn, you'll get more than just a pleasant room and swimming pool during your stay. You'll also have broadband Internet access in your room and in the hotel's conference areas delivered to you by a wireless mesh network from FiretideTM .

Case Study: Shared P.E.T. Imaging

While many hospitals have computerized tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, only a few large facilities with authorized nuclear medicine programs have powerful Positron Emission Tomography (PET) systems. Shared P.E.T. Imaging, LLC, is making this advanced technology more available, thanks to its mobile PET scanners and a Firetide? Instant Mesh NetworkTM.

Case Study: Los Gatos Opera House

It started with the Los Gatos Opera House and a desire to attract businesspeople for conferences, meetings, and events. The Chamber of Commerce was also interested in attracting visitors to the quaint town of Los Gatos. Only one thing was lacking - Internet access for business visitors. Running wires through old pressed tin walls and ceilings in the Opera House was not an option. A FiretideTM Wireless Instant NetworkTM was the only feasible solution and as a result, Los Gatos became the premier example of what happens when a town partners with private business to deliver free public Wi-Fi Internet access.

Case Study: Computer History Museum

The Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA decided to make a little history of its own by setting up a Firetide Wireless Instant Network. Now the Museum provides network access to staff, event attendees, and museum visitors alike, anywhere within the 120,000-square-foot facility.
